Designs of Bending Type Pogo Pin Connector

In order to ensure that the four Pogo Pins can be solidly soldered on PCB, we press the four Pogo Pins into the housing holes. This not only ensures the distance between each Pogo Pin but also can be more efficient for SMT. In terms of the interference fit between Pogo Pins and the housing hole, we designed double convex ring interference to prevent Pogo Pins from falling off from the plastic holes, and the set of connectors is tightly attached to the PCB.

The center distance between each pin of this set of connectors is 2.54mm, which is the same as the center distance of the four pads on the PCB to ensure that the soldering position is not offset. The plastic housing is an injection molding process after inspection can be used. 

The plungers and barrels are turned by CAM, the surface is plated with gold with good electric conductivity and soldering performance, and then the plungers, barrels, and springs are assembled together by a special crimp machine to become a Pogo Pins. Pogo Pins are pressed into the holes of the housing with automatic equipment, and the surface of the barrel is pressed to the surface of the housing.

Because the soldering of the connector was a bending type, the tail pin of the bending connector was provided with a positioning bar. During soldering, the product is inserted into the positioning hole of the PCB. The connector was sodered firmly and there is no risk of deviation. with the tail pin of bend, it was very convenient for R&D engineers to select various product spaces.

When designing this product, it was very important to take care of the matching between the outer diameter of the chamfers and the diameter of the barrel. When a single pogo pin was installed into the housing, the interference force should not be too large or too small. If it is too large, the housing will crack, and if it is too small, the pin will be returned back or fall off.

Commonly used copper alloy properties

Brass: The tensile strength of brass is 345~620MPa and the yield strength is 150MPa. It has an elongation of 5%. When brass needs to be bent, C3601 is usually selected for tempering to reduce its hardness. Brass has a minimum cutting performance of 90%. And brass has a conductivity of 26%. Brass is cheaper than other materials and is most commonly used.

Phosphor Bronze: The tensile strength of phosphor bronze is 700~800MPa and the yield strength is 600MPa. Its elastic modulus exceeds 110MPa. The hardness deformation space of phosphor bronze is large, ranging from HV170 to 210. Moreover, the electrical conductivity of phosphor bronze is 13%, which is worse than that of brass. Phosphor bronze has the advantages of high mechanical strength, high elasticity, impact resistance, and good toughness.

Beryllium copper: Beryllium copper has the highest tensile strength of 1100MPa among copper metals. Its yield strength is 520MPa. Its elastic modulus exceeds 135MPa. The hardness of Beryllium copper is between HV380 and 440. Beryllium copper has excellent electrical properties with conductivity up to 45% when heat treated. Beryllium copper has the advantage of high mechanical strength and can be strengthened after treatment. But materials are relatively expensive.

Tellurium copper: Tellurium copper has a tensile strength of 330MPa and a yield strength of 275MPa. Tellurium copper has a hardness of HV100. Tellurium copper reaches 15% in elongation and 85% in turning performance.

Tellurium copper has the highest conductivity among these copper metals, up to 85%~93%, with excellent electrical characteristics. Tellurium copper alloy is the best cutting material among high copper alloys, with excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature resistance.
